President’s Message

We will be holding our December meeting at the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum during “Gem Fest” the Southern California Gem and Mineral Show (formerly MSSC-Pasadena).  Unless you are a show participant/volunteer and have been issued a guest pass, you will have to pay for parking and entry into the museum. Admission:  Adults $9.00, seniors and students $6.50, children ages 5-12 $2.00, Children under 5 and Museum members are free.  For more information and directions see: http://www.mineralsocal.org.  This will be a joint meeting with the Southern California Friends of Mineralogy and will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday December 13 in one of the second floor classrooms.

We will have, primarily, a business meeting since we need to finalize preparations for the 2004 Conference and hold elections for next year's officers.   The meeting will have to be brief, since two short talks are scheduled after the SCFM and SCMM meetings.  Don't forget to send verbal auction specimens for our 2004 Conference to Sugar White so that she can photograph them, and also be sure to pick up some of the white paper boxes for specimens donated to the sales table.  I encourage members to participate in the Conference by sharing your slides and experiences with the group.

At our August meeting we had a guest visitor (Ron Gibbs) from Michigan.  Ron maintains an excellent website (www.theimage.com) on mineralogy, faceting and digital photography. It is well worth visiting.

Directions to the December 13 meeting:  The Museum is located at 900 Exposition Blvd, Los Angeles and can be reached from I-110 several miles south of I-10, across from the University of Southern California. .  People will need to use the elevators to reach the second floor.  The classroom loca-tions will be marked in the MSSC program—be sure to check the pro-gram for the meeting time and location.  The two rooms are side by side.

When you get off the elevators on the second floor make a right hand turn.  You will come to a wall in about 10-15 feet. Turn right.  (On your left will be bathrooms and on the right is a water fountain).  Immediately in front of you will be double doors.

Go through the double doors and go straight down the hall. (Do not go

up the stairs.)  In about 20 or 30 feet, there will be classrooms to the

left (there are no classrooms on the right).  The first classroom is the small "Science" classroom.  The next classroom is Classroom A where we plan to have the lectures and group meetings.   We will have signs and volunteers available to help direct folks.  - Paul

Conference Reminders

Dinners Friday and Saturday

Many thanks to Ann Meister for agreeing to take care of the food on these two nights.  .

Volunteers are needed to assist Ann for these two dinners.  It doesn’t all come together magic-ally—it takes teamwork.  The kitchen will be open for coordinating the food preparations.

On Friday, a ham will be provided, and our attendees will supply the rest of the meal.  Each person or family is asked to bring an appetizer (if veggies, make sure they are fresh and crisp), a salad, a side dish or casserole, or dessert.

Saturday evening’s dinner will be the familiar Lasagna Buffet (including one meatless Lasagna) with salad, rolls and margarine, and cake.  (Be sure to sign up and pay your $5.00 with the Registration form included in this bulletin.)

Mineral Donations

Please get your donations for the Live and Silent auctions and Sales Table to Sugar White asap, in advance of the Conference.   Auction minerals must be photographed prior to auction.  The win-ning bidder gets both the specimen and the slide.  Mailings should go to:

           Sugar White

2 Summit Avenue

Redlands, CA  92373

If you have minerals for the giveaway table, they should be set out on Friday afternoon during the registration and microscope setup time.

Both auctions and the Sales Table are major sources of income for the Club to pay the

expenses of the Conference and need your support.

Saturday Lunch at the Museum:

Once again, lunch on Saturday will be Subway sandwiches and is included with your Registra-tion fee.  Be sure to make your sandwich selection on the Registration form.

Member Slide Presentations or Short

Contributed Talks:

See the Registration form for a space to list your possible contributions in this area.

Field Trip:

At publication time, no details on the Sunday field trip were available.  This will be announced at the Conference, or perhaps at the December 13 meeting in Los Angeles (see page 1).

CFMS Museum Committee at Work

The following article appeared in the December 2003 issue of CFMS Newsletter.  It sounds like a fine opportunity to publicize the Jurupa Cultural Center.  (Jack Nieburger, are you paying atten-tion?)

MUSEUM COMMITTEE REQUEST

BY Debbie Bunn, Museum Committee Chair

The Museum Committee would like to solicit help from all the members of CFMS.  We would like to compile a listing of all the museums, parks, or special places that might e of interest to rock-hounds.  We would then sort these places accord-ing to State and make that listing available to members who were planning to travel…or maybe just interested in taking a one-day field trip.

Maybe you are traveling to Washington next summer.  Interested in information on the Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park?  Or, if you come to Sacramento, don’t miss the Sierra College Natural History Museum—Great Dinosaurs!!

This will be an ongoing project, but for now, anyone who has any suggestions for this list of “places to see”, please mail me a brochure or short write-up.

We are still considering how to make this information available to people.  Perhaps a small booklet or a cen-tral file that could be consulted by e-mail or telephone.  Here’s a chance to let people know about that neat little museum you discovered on your last vacation.

Please contact the Museum Committee so we can share that knowledge with others.    Contact

CFMS Dues and Insurance

Richard Pankey, CFMS Treasurer

The dues of Membership Societies for CFMS are $1.50 annually per individual member, regardless of membership classification.  The only exception is for CFMS Honorary members.  Some clubs have interpreted this as meaning Club or Society honorary members, also.  The intent of the Bylaws was to exclude CFMS Honorary members only.  A change to the Bylaws has been initiated to add “CFMS” in front of Honorary in ARTICLE IV DUES:  Section 1; to clarify any misunderstanding.

At our November 8th Directors’ Meeting the Directors approved a $.50 increase in the insurance charge to a total of $4.50 per “active member”.  As defined by our insurance company an “active member” is any member who attends one or more functions each year (the basis for our rate).  This includes activities such as, but not limited to, general membership meetings, annual picnics, Christmas gathering, field trips, participation in shop or classes, etc.  Any attendance and/or participation in a club activity creates liability exposure ad therefore requires payment of the insurance charge.  Our insurance renewal date was October 16th and the Federation has already paid the entire premium for this year.  Dues are due and payable on January 1 based on your membership list as of December 31.  Dues and insurance for 2004 are $6.00 for all classes of members and for all “active members.”  - Excerpted from CFMS Newsletter 12/03

Conference Registration and SCMM Membership Renewal Guidelines

Now is the time for you to make your advance registration for the 2003 Pacific Micromount Conference as well as renewing your membership in the Southern California Micro-Mineralogists. Page 5 and 6 of this MicroBits is a two-sided form that lets you do both.  Side one is your advance registration slip and side two is the membership renewal form.

Registration: Please give us the names of all in your party.  We really like to have a name tag waiting for everyone.  In addition to registration fees you will be asked to make reservations for Saturday dinner and pay an extra fee for that.  For those signing up for the Sunday Field Trip, pay extra attention to the need for membership and dues.  This year you carry over conference fees to side two.  We are going to save you postage by requiring only mailing one check.

Membership renewal.  Please indicate with a check mark if you are a Friend, Honorary Member or Regular Member. There are no dues for Friends or Honorary Members so your carryover fees for the Conference is your total.  We keep two rosters.  The Treasurer keeps track of Honorary and Regular Members while the Bulletin Editor adds to that list the Friends.  Friends receive the December MicroBits as an invitation to the Pacific Micromount Conference.

A word about Plus memberships. The primary member pays $10.00/year.  All other family members at the same address are Plus members and pay $5.00/year. We need the first name of the Plus members.  The fee for Plus members is needed to pay dues and insurance to the California Federation, which is the source of our Club’s liability insurance. This is the reason that ONLY dues paying members may participate in Field Trips.

Also, we ask that all fill out the form which includes mailing address, phone number and email address.  You move around a lot and area codes change frequently.  Also, you change e-mail addresses, too.  This will give us an update for our rosters. Our rosters are held PRIVATE.  We share a membership list with the Field Trip Chairman so she/he can make sure only current members participate.  Otherwise only the Bulletin Editor and Treasurer have this information.

After you total the carryover fees from side one, add in the Regular Membership and the Plus Membership Fees on the reverse, then send the form and your check (made out to SCMM) to: Beverly Moreau, 3113 Topaz Lane, #A, Fullerton, CA  92831.
