This is the annual abbreviated issue of MicroBits following the Conference, hence:

SCMM Itty-Bits

Following tradition, we have foregone the February meeting due to the Pacific Micromount Conference being held during the first weekend of the month.

Those of you who missed both the December meeting and the Conference will be interested in noting the 2003 SCMM Officer listing at the head of this page.  At the December meeting, it was suggested by our new President, Paul Adams, that the group meet only four times a year (third Saturday in April, August and December), with an emphasis on providing a special program or field trip on those occasions.  The April meeting location and program/field trip will be announced in the regular April issue of MicroBits

Attendance at the Conference totaled 41, down from previous years.  Leonard Morgan traveled all the way from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, to attend.  Despite the smaller attendance, our Treasurer Bob White tells us that the Sales Table, under Garth Bricker’s management, made a major gain over 2002, netting $346.00.  The auctions brought in $448.00.  We wish to thank all those who donated to the Giveaway Table and the Sales Table and Auction—and especially those who bought from the Sales Table and the Auctions.  Proceeds from the sales go into our Speakers Fund.  Expenses for the Saturday night dinner once again just about equaled the receipts.  Congratulations to Ann Meister and her crew for achieving this so efficiently.  Food and fellowship at the Friday night potluck was great.  Sugar White did a good job with the Subway sandwich lunch on Saturday.

Bob also reports 42 members paid up for 2003.  Two new members are Barbara Matz of Petaluma and Saul Krotki of Seattle.  If you haven’t yet paid your dues, send them to Bob White.

SCMM Members at Tucson

Our anonymous on-site reporter gives us this bird’s eye view of important happenings involving our members at Tucson 2003:

Many SCMM members and other attendees of the Pacific Coast Micromount Conference travel to Tucson for the REALLY BIG mineral show.  There is a variety of activities, and our members participate.

The Friends of Mineralogy hold the judging of the Warner Lieber Photography Contest at Tucson, and our Eugene Reynolds won first place.  Congratulations, Gene!

SCMM Members at Tucson  (Continued)

The Tucson Gem and Mineral Society holds an annual mineral slide competition.  There are two divisions—a macro division and a micro division.  Judging is done by the audience at the Saturday Awards Night.  Sugar White won both first and second in the micro division.  Well done!

The micromount group of the Tucson Gem and Mineral Society held the annual Arthur Roe Micromount Symposium in conjunction with the show.  It is a one-day affair, with a trading session followed by speakers, and concluding with give-away tables.  This year Sugar White was the leadoff speaker talking on “Great Arsenate Locations of the Great Basin.”

_______

Oops!

Juanita Curtis has suffered a broken foot from a fall at her home, and was unable to attend the Conference.  That’s pretty sad, when you stop to think that Juanita is the reason we have a Pacific Micromount Conference.  It was her brainchild, and has been going on for the past 38 years.  Currently, she is wheelchair bound, but has hopes of being up and at ‘em soon.

Milestone

Anne Seminaris, well known for her field trip leadership, has reached a milestone in her mineralogy training.  In December she graduated from Rancho Santiago Canyon College in Orange, CA with a certificate naming her a Graduate Gemologist.  Her sights are currently set on employment with GIA.  Go, girl!

Fond Farewell

We’re sorry to report that long time SCMM member Fred Croad passed away the latter part of January.  Fred and his wife, Ann, had rarely missed a Conference until the past couple of years, when Ann became ill and unable to participate.  Our sympathies go out to Ann and their family.
