President’s Message

This will be the 40th anniversary of the Pacific Micromount Conference.  As you read through the newsletter and the Regi-stration information, you will notice that there have been a few changes.  In particular, we will not be meeting Friday night, but instead will be conducting the Conference all day Saturday and Sunday morning.

The Friday night potluck will be switched to Saturday night, and as an enticement for people to attend the potluck and evening talks, we are offering a drawing for a free one-year subscription to the Mineralogical Record.  The winner must be present at the end of the talks.

Sunday will be an optional field trip to the Baghdad Chase Mine, or scope time at the Museum.  Please let us know in advance, on the registration form, if you will be attending the field trip or if you want scope time Sunday morning.   I hope to see you at the 2005 Conference.

40th Annual Pacific Micromount Conference

Despite some rumors to the contrary, the 2005 Conference will remain at the same location as in recent years – The San Bernardino County Natural History Museum, in Redlands.  The dates are Saturday, January 29 and Sunday, January 30.

Doors will open at 8:00 a.m. for check-in and new registrations, filling the Give-away tables, setting up scopes, socializing, etc.

If you have minerals to donate for the Auction, please note the urgent request (on page 2) to send them to Sugar White before Christmas (to be photographed), as she and Bob are now living in Tucson and she does not have access to three-hour turnaround on film processing.

Directions:  The Museum is located just north of the 10 Freeway, at 2024 Orange Tree Lane, Redlands, California.  (Take California Street exit and go north to Orange Tree Lane, then turn right to Museum Entrance.)

Conference Reminders

Potluck Dinner Saturday Evening

Many thanks to Ann Meister for agreeing to take care of the Saturday night potluck.

There will be no banquet, as in past years, since we are cutting out the Friday night opening for the Conference

A ham will be provided (again, thanks to Ann), and our attendees will supply the rest of the meal.  Each person or family is asked to bring an appetizer (if veggies, make sure they are fresh and crisp), a salad, a side dish or casserole, or dessert.

Volunteers are needed to assist Ann for the dinner, as it takes teamwork to get the meal together.  The kitchen will be open all day for the storing of your food contribution and for co-ordinating the last-minute food preparations.

  Mineral Donations

Please get your donations for the verbal auction to Sugar White before Christmas.   Bob and Sugar have moved to Arizona, and she no longer has access to the three-hour turnaround for developing slides as she did while in this area.   Auction minerals must be photographed prior to auction.  (Be sure to identify your mineral.)  The winning bidder gets both the specimen and the slide.  Mailings should go to:

           Sugar White

9641 E. Hickory Tree Pl.

Tucson, AZ  85749

If you have minerals for the giveaway table, they should be set out early on Saturday morning during the registration and microscope setup time.

Both auctions and the Sales Table are major sources of income for the Club to pay the

expenses of the Conference and need your support.

Saturday Lunch at the Museum:

Once again, lunch on Saturday will be Subway sandwiches and is included  (cont’d. next page)

 -Conference Reminders (Continued)

with your Registration fee.  Be sure to make your sandwich selection on the Registration form.

Member Slide Presentations or Short

Contributed Talks:

See the Registration form for a space to list your possible contributions in this area.

Field Trip:

Weather permitting, there will be a field trip on Sunday morning to the Bagdad Chase Mine, led by Bob Housley.  (Details will be available at the Conference.)  Be sure to indicate your interest on the Registration form.  .

CFMS Dues and Insurance

Richard Pankey, CFMS Treasurer

The dues of Membership Societies for CFMS are $1.50 annually per individual member, regardless of membership classification.  The only exception is for CFMS Honorary members.  Some clubs have inter-preted this as meaning Club or Society honorary members, also.  The intent of the Bylaws was to exclude CFMS Honorary members only.  A change to the Bylaws was made in 2003 to add “CFMS” in front of Honorary in ARTICLE IV DUES:  Section 1; to clarify any misunderstanding.

At our November 13 Directors’ Meeting the Directors approved a $.50 increase in the insurance charge to a total of $5.00 per “active member”.  As defined by our insurance company (the basis for our rate) an “active member” is any member who attends one or more functions each year .  This includes activities such as, but not limited to, general membership meetings, annual picnics, Christmas gathering, field trips, participation in shop or classes, etc.  Any attendance and/or participation in a club activity creates liability exposure ad therefore requires payment of the insurance charge.  Our insurance renewal date was October 16th and the Federation has already paid the entire premium for this year.  Dues are due and payable on January 1 based on your membership list as of December 31,which should accompany the dues payment.

Dues and insurance for 2005 are $6.50 for all classes of members and for all “active members”.  The dues/insurance payment form is in this newsletter along with the new officers form or available from your Director.  It is important to your club that this form is completely and accurately filled out so that your club information is up to date for inclusion in the Society Roster.  This is the contact information that the Federation uses to notify your club and your members of Federation news, events, and happenings.  The Society Roster is your link to the Federation and its member societies.

Please send your dues payment, membership list and officers change form to Pat LaRue before the end of January.  Forms included.

CFMS INSURANCE REPORT

Fred Ott, CFMS Insurance Chairperson

Just A reminder:  the procedures for obtaining insurance coverage for your society’s special events (such as club shows) and certificates of insurance (shows and field trips) have changed effective October 16, 2004.

All such requests are to now be forwarded directly to the Federation’s insurance agent, Patt McDaniel of McDaniel Insurance Services, Inc.  An explanation and complete step-by-step procedure for all aspects of your society’s insurance needs can now be found on the Federation’s website, www.cfmsinc.org, by accessing the Federation Insurance Program link found on the left-hand column of the Federation’s home page.  Additionally, a copy of each of the pages found at this site will be provided to each Director at the November 13th Director’s Meeting in Fresno.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of following all of the procedures when submitting requests.  Incomplete or inaccurate requests will be returned and an additional processing fee will be required to resubmit the requests.  Complete all forms in full and don’t use phrases such as “same as last year”.  When in doubt, contact Patt McDaniel at Patt McDaniel Insurance Services, P.O. Box 1294,Ojai, CA  93024, Telephone:  805-646-9948 or 800-400-7288; Fax 805-646-9976; Email:  mcins@west.net.

For those societies who have previously purchased Optional Premises Liability and/or Property Coverages, those coverages have been automatically renewed for the 2004-2005 policy year and I have mailed invoices to each such club for payment.  Beginning in October 2005, those invoices will be mailed to each club directly by McDaniel Insurance services Inc.

1 The finely fibrous mineral Mazzite-Na was discovered fifteen years ago by SCMM members, Jim and Veryl Carnahan.  It has taken all this time for the development of new techniques in order to gather the necessary data to describe the mineral.  The talk will cover the saga of this long time unknown to final approval as a new species.  A review of the associated minerals will round out the presentation.

Conference Registration and SCMM Membership Renewal Guidelines

Now is the time for you to make your advance registration for the 2005 Pacific Micromount Conference as well as renewing your membership in the Southern California Micro-Mineralogists. Page 5 and 6 of this MicroBits is a two-sided form that lets you do both.  Side one is your advance registration slip and side two is the membership renewal form.

Registration: Please give us the names of all in your party.  We really like to have a nametag waiting for everyone.  For those signing up for the Sunday Field Trip, pay extra attention to the need for membership and dues.  This year you carry over conference fees to side two.  We are going to save you postage by requiring only mailing one check.

Membership renewal.  Please indicate with a check mark if you are a Friend, Honorary Member or Regular Member. There are no dues for Friends or Honorary Members so your carryover fees for the Conference is your total.  We keep two rosters.  The Treasurer keeps track of Honorary and Regular Members while the Bulletin Editor adds to that list the Friends.  Friends receive the December MicroBits as an invitation to the Pacific Micromount Conference.

A word about Plus memberships. The primary member pays $15.00/year.  All other family members at the same address are Plus members and pay $6.00/year.  We need the first name of the Plus members.  The fee for Plus members is needed to pay dues and insurance to the California Federation, which is the source of our Club’s liability insurance. This is the reason that ONLY dues paying members may participate in Field Trips.

Also, we ask that all fill out the form which includes mailing address, phone number and email address.  You move around a lot and area codes change frequently.  Also, you change e-mail addresses, too.  This will give us an update for our rosters. Our rosters are held PRIVATE.  We share a membership list with the Field Trip Chairman so she/he can make sure only current members participate.  Otherwise only the Bulletin Editor and Treasurer have this information.

After you total the carryover fees from side one, add in the Regular Membership and the Plus Membership Fees on the reverse, then send the form and your check (made out to SCMM) to: Beverly Moreau, 3113 Topaz Lane, #A, Fullerton, CA  92831.

CFMS Earth Science Seminars

The year 2005 will be the twentieth anniversary of seminars being held at Zzyzx.  Strangely, many of the folks who were there in 1985 still show an interest in the seminars.  We are planning something of a celebration to commemorate the 20th year.  On Saturday April 9th we will hold an Open House.  If you have wondered about Zzyzx, this is a good opportunity to satisfy your curiosity.  There will be a guided tour of the facility delving into the past, present and future of The Desert Studies Center.  The students and instructors will be displaying their accomplishments and explaining their area of interest.  We will serve a Barbecued Dinner about 3:00 p.m. featuring steak or chicken with all the trimmings.  Elsewhere in this Newsletter is a registration form that must be completed prior to March 15, 2005 in order to have sufficient food in the proper amounts prior to this event.  Transportation and storage contributing to this.  The nearest markets handling food in quantities are about 80 miles away, so we can’t just run down to the corner market.

Excerpted from December 2004 CFMS Newsletter

(Ed. Note: Registration Form for Zzyzx Open House may obtained from Beverly Moreau.).
